Creative…

This is a perfect example of really clever marketing. It’s a business card for a Canadian personal trainer, and it the name is unable to be read unless you stretch the rubber it is on. It encourages people to work to read, and maybe strain their muscles.

I thought you might think it’s funny, and I really needed to post something.

The Year 2000 (In 1950)

I came across this article earlier today, and I thought it was funny. It attempted to predict what the year 2000 would be like, in the year 1950. Some of the funniest parts include the prediction that underwear could be recycled into candy, and we’ll eat sawdust instead of normal meals.

In encourage you to check it out, but it’s a scanned image from a magazine, so it may be annoying to read.

Update: I just remembered the show on Discovery Channel called 2050, which is basically the same concept. I’m interested in hearing what they got wrong and right when 2050 finally comes.

Ian’s Shoelace Site

A while ago, I found this site called Ian’s Shoelace Site, and I thought it was pretty cool. I checked around found some cool lacing styles and tying styles, and then bookmarked it for later. A couple weeks later, my friend and I found the site again, and we laced our shoes, in a cool checkerboard pattern.

The site is nice, easy to navigate, and isn’t to flashy like most new sites these days. It is run by Ian Fieggen, where he links to tutorials on how to make different type of laces, and other interesting tidbits. My favorite part though, is the Ian Knot which is a really quick way to tie your shoes. It has a video, and it’s pretty easy to learn according to my friends.

I encourage you to check it out, because it’s really cool, and it’s the only shoelace site I’ve ever been to.

Better luck next time, everyone.

My Favorite Dashboard Widgets

My friend Nick wrote a post about the Dashboard widgets he thought to be most useful, so I decided to add some things myself. I expanded it to 9, with a couple tips.

10. Other Tips - Dashboard kickstart, which opens dashboard on login, and dashboard developer mode, which can put widgets on the desktop. Another way to do this is dragging the widget from the bottom, hitting f12, then dropping it.

9. Uncle Sam - Offers me funny jokes and quotes when I open up dashboard, I like them, and think they are clever.

8. Shiira Mini - A cool dashboard widget which serves as a nice web browser, looks cool, and opening up dashboard is nice for seeing smaller versions of a webpage.

7. People/Buisness - I was going to keep these as separate entries, but they serve the same purpose. If I need to find a place or a person, I open up these and type in what I know.

6. Weather - Tells me the weather, looks nice while doing it. Also gives me a forecast, and a quick glance at temperature.

5. iSheer - Helps me upload quick screenshots and images to imageshack.us, when I need to show someone something, and get it done quickly.

4. iTunes VinylTunes Widget: Shows the album art of my current song, and I put it own my desktop as an iTunes controller. It also has controls and song name, which makes it really nice.

3. Dictionary - This is basically a given, and obvious. It’s very useful, and helps me find synonyms for words too.

2. Calculator - Another given, really helpful when I need to do some quick math, just open up Dashboard.

1. iStat Pro - Gives me a lot of information on my system, battery, uptime, network, CPU and RAM used, and hard drive space. It’s crucial, and customizable.

You can find all these on the Apple website, in the downloads section. If not, just Google them, and you’ll find them.

Bill Introduced Banning Cell Phones and iPods on City Streets

Recently, a bill is being introduced trying to pass a restriction on cell phone and iPods on New York city streets and crosswalks. The reason this is being introduced is three people dying talking on their cell phone, or reportedly listening to their iPod.

My opinion on this? The people who were killed on the streets or crosswalks were definitely not talking on their cell phone, or listening to their iPod, but were probably instead killed while looking down, and not watching out for what they are doing. Not to sound heartless to anyone, because I’m not sure what they were doing when they were killed, but I have the feeling that if they were using it correctly and watching where they were going, they would have been fine.

I go to New York City pretty often, and always see people listening to their iPod, or talking on their cell phone. Even I was using my cellphone, while walking down the city streets. The things that the people that I saw were doing was different from the people killed is that all of them were looking up, and not constantly changing the song on their iPod. I was busy text messaging my friend on my cell phone, but my parents told me to stop, but never gave me a reason.

If anything, the danger that people will face when doing these type of things, is even more evident now that the people have been killed. This, I believe, makes the law unnecessary.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force “Hoax”?

A few days ago, there was a bomb scare caused by LED devices that portrayed a cartoon character giving an obscene gesture to the onlooker, causing all transportation in Boston to be shut down. The two people who placed the ads around Boston, Sean Stevens and Peter Berdovsky, were prosecuted on the basis that they planted hoax bombs around Boston. There are a couple of reasons why this wasn’t a hoax, mainly because they did not try to trick people into thinking it was a bomb.

The way Boston police reacted to this was completely blown out of proportion, in my opinion, and that it seems odd that not a single person on the Boston police force knows about the “Aqua Teen Hunger Force.” It is also odd that Boston is the only place that reacted so greatly to these devices, because they were also placed in other large cities such as New York and Seattle.

My personal opinion on the matter is that the Boston police force realized they made a huge mistake, and wasted a lot of resources, so they are now trying to pass the blame. Because of their inability to research what those LED signs were, only learning that it had a battery and wires behind it, and then proceeding to shut down transportation in the city. They are prosecuting the people who placed the ads because they don’t want to own up to their mistake, and are giving them a much harsher crime then they should be given. At most, the pair should be given a ticket for littering and that’s it.

Finally, the way that Sean and Peter handled the situation was quite funny, and really put the whole thing into perspective. In a press conference, where they were told not to talk about the case by their lawyer, they only answered questions about hair, telling reporters “Sorry, that isn’t a hair question.” Even when a reporter accused them of not taking it seriously, they said “We are taking this very seriously.”, adding even more humor into the fray.

Basically, it was nothing more than a guerrila, viral marketing campaign, that was blown out of proportion. We overreacted because as a country, we get scared of things when we don’t know what they are, especially in a time where we have the constant fear of terrorism. (A funny comic strip relating to that is this one, where it shows how scared we are of terrorism.)

Carbonite

One of my favorite overall themes that I can use a lot, because it isn’t too flashy and isn’t too dull has finally entered Beta 2. Carbonite, by Pixelnet Design, is a great theme, that is shaping up to be amazing. With the release of Beta 2, an iTunes and Mail skin was added, along with unified support. It is incomplete though, because the small forms of some elements keep their aqua form, while the larger ones don’t. I’m looking forward to the finished product, because I think it will be great.

As usual, Carbonite is for Shapeshifter, and may be ported to a Windowblinds theme eventually.
